THE MIFFLINBURG CHRISTKINDL MARKET
by Matthew Wagner
After 30 wonderful years of growth and prosperity, the Christkindl Market of Mifflinburg may have to disband. We are making an urgent appeal to Mifflinburg and the surrounding communities for individuals – especially younger people – to join our Board and Committees to ensure the survival of Christkindl Market. The problem is that many of the Board members who have worked for the Market during most of those 30 years simply don’t have the physical ability to continue the massive amount of work required to produce the Market. We have been fortunate that some new folks have joined the ranks – just not enough.
There is no exaggeration here. The overwhelming burden of the work that is required to produce the Market has fallen on a few and they can no longer do it. We also have a number of Board members who are retiring from the Board because of illness, family obligations, or have just put in their time.
Mifflinburg Christkindl Market is a non-profit organization. After setting aside revenue for Market production costs, the Board donates their profits back to the community in the form of grants. In the past few years, we have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to various community groups including Mifflinburg Hose Co. No.1, Mifflinburg Community Pool, Mifflinburg Police Dept., Mifflinburg YMCA, Gutelius House Museum-Preservation Mifflinburg, American Legion Post 410 Children’s Fishing Derby, and Herr Memorial Library. This fulfills our mission of not only providing an exciting holiday celebration for the community, but our commitment to providing grants to our community groups.
Individuals interested in helping in some way, large or small, either as a Board member or on one of our Committees, are invited to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 6:30 PM. We will meet in the Herr Memorial Library Community Room. Please consider joining our team to continue this wonderful holiday event.
